Clothing as daily practice
When life has rhythm, it feels more balanced. Perhaps this is why so many of us keep journals, make lists, and return to familiar rituals again and again. Repetition gives shape to our days.
A cup of coffee in the morning.
Then first light entering the room.
A quite moment before the day begins.
And then choosing what to wear.
We often think rituals limit us. Perhaps they do the opposite. They free us from unnecessary thoughts. They quite anxiety. They create space. Because not every movement needs our attention.
Clothing, too, can become a daily ritual. Some garments make this particularly visible.
Fastening an inner tie.
Wrapping the fabric around the body.
Adjusting the sleeves.
Pulling up the trousers.
Simple movements. Familiar movements. Almost meditative.
Sometimes, the ritual of dressing is enough to mark a transition. The body is ready. The mind follows. Anyone who has dressed for practice knows this feeling.
Putting on a gi.
Straightening the fabric.
Tying the belt.
The practice begins before the first movement. And perhaps it does not end with the last.
Our days begin this way too. At the end, the gestures repeat themselves in reverse.
Unfastening.
Unwrapping.
Taking off.
Folding.
Hanging the garment away.
And tomorrow, the familiar rhythm begins again.
